Massachusetts, ditch your power company

Massachusetts power rates keep climbing. A whole-home solar and battery system puts that cost back in your hands.

The state still has real incentives on the books, and a lease keeps the federal value in play. The math works here in 2026.

15% tax credit

The state Residential Energy Credit covers 15% of your install, up to $1,000.

$0 sales tax

Solar and battery equipment is exempt from the 6.25% Massachusetts sales tax.

Massachusetts Solar Incentives

The Massachusetts incentives you can stack

The federal credit ended for systems you buy outright. Massachusetts still has real incentives on the books, and a lease keeps the 30% federal value in play. Our financing partner claims it and passes it through as a lower payment.

  • Earn performance payments on your production through the state SMART program
  • Skip the 6.25% sales tax, since Massachusetts exempts solar equipment
  • Skip the added property tax, since residential solar is exempt by law
  • Get bill credits for the solar energy you send back through net metering
  • Keep the 30% federal value in play with a solar lease or PPA

Frequently Asked Questions

What solar incentives are available in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts has one of the strongest incentive stacks in the country. You can earn SMART payments for the power your system produces, get net metering credits for what you send back to the grid, claim a 15% state tax credit up to $1,000 on a system you own, and skip both the sales tax on equipment and 20 years of added property tax. Add a battery and you can earn ConnectedSolutions payments on top of all of it.

How does the SMART program work?

SMART pays you a fixed rate for every kilowatt-hour your system produces, separate from your net metering bill credits, so you benefit from both at once. Under the current SMART 3.0 program, residential systems lock in that rate for a 20-year term. It’s available through the three big utilities, Eversource, National Grid, and Unitil, and adding battery storage increases the rate. We handle the application for you.

Does Massachusetts weather impact solar panel performance?

While Massachusetts experiences all four seasons, including snowy winters, solar panels can still generate significant electricity throughout the year. Modern solar panels perform well even in less intense sunlight, and snow typically melts or slides off angled roofs. Venture Home designs systems optimized for Massachusetts weather conditions to maximize your energy production.

Does the federal solar tax credit still apply in Massachusetts in 2026?

For a system you buy with cash or a loan, the 30% federal credit ended on December 31, 2025, so it no longer applies. If you lease your system instead, our financing claims the commercial version of the credit and passes that value back to you as lower monthly payments. So depending on how you pay, the federal benefit can still reach you. We’ll walk you through all options.

What’s the average cost of solar in Massachusetts?

The cost of a solar panel system in Massachusetts varies depending on factors like system size, the type of equipment chosen (panels, inverters, etc.), and roof complexity. The average cost of a 6-Kw solar panel system in Massachusetts is $12,166. The federal tax credit and state tax credit help reduce this overall cost.
