Frequently Asked Questions
What is a solar tax incentive, exactly?
A solar tax incentive is a government-sponsored program designed to encourage the adoption of solar energy by reducing the overall cost for individuals or businesses. These incentives come in various forms, but they all share the goal of making solar more affordable and accessible.
Does everyone qualify for the federal tax incentive?
The traditional tax credit that homeowners claimed for systems purchased expired on December 31, 2025. That credit covered up to 30% of the cost of qualified expenditures. Under the OBBB, the section 48e credit called the Clean Electricity Investment Credit was established to allow businesses to claim 30% of qualified expenditures on solar PV and storage systems. PPAs, leases, preapaid leases, and Energy Service Agreements are eligible for the Clean Electricity Investment Credit.
How do I know whether my state or local government offers incentives?
To find state and local solar incentives, use resources like our website, the DSIRE database, your state energy office’s website, local government websites, and your utility company. Our team will also guide you through all incentives and ensure you’re taking advantage of the best offerings.
Does the federal incentive apply every year, or just the first year I install my system?
The federal solar tax credit (ITC) is a one-time credit claimed for the tax year in which your system is placed in service (the year it becomes operational). It doesn’t apply every year.
Do I have to pay for my system in cash to get the incentives?
You can still take advantage of incentives like the federal tax credit even if you lease or use other payment options. There are also state, utility, and other local incentives for solar, EV charging, and batteries.
