Maryland homeowners are overpaying for electricity

Maryland electricity rates are up 37% since 2021 — and your roof can fight back

Maryland homeowners pay around 18¢ per kWh — and rates have risen faster here than the national average. Solar locks in your energy cost and puts two income streams to work: bill credits through net metering, and cash from selling Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) for every megawatt-hour your system produces.

How it works

From your first call to flipping the switch, we manage every step. Most projects go from signed agreement to activated system in 8–12 weeks.

1. Free consultation & custom design

We assess your roof, energy usage, and utility territory to design a system optimized for Maryland’s climate and your specific goals.

2. Permitting & utility paperwork

We handle all local permits, your interconnection application with BGE, Pepco, Delmarva Power, or Potomac Edison, and your registration for the SREC program.

3. Professional local Installation

Our local W-2 crews (never subcontractors) install your system — typically in one to two days of on-roof work.

4. Activation & ongoing monitoring

Once your utility approves interconnection, net metering begins automatically and your system starts generating SRECs. We monitor performance for the life of your system.

Maryland Solar Incentives

Bill savings and cash income — at the same time.

Maryland’s incentive stack combines ongoing bill credits with a 15-year cash income program. Venture Home handles enrollment and registration for all of them.

  • Net Metering — earn bill credits at the full retail rate for every kilowatt-hour your system sends to the grid; credits roll forward indefinitely and can be cashed out each April; available through BGE, Pepco, Delmarva Power, Potomac Edison, SMECO, and Choptank
  • SRECs (Solar Renewable Energy Credits) — for every megawatt-hour your system generates, you earn a tradable certificate that can be sold for cash; current prices run approximately $40–55 per certificate, with a 15-year earning period; a typical 10 kW system generates around 10–13 SRECs per year
  • EmPOWER Maryland — Maryland’s statewide energy efficiency program, administered through BGE, Pepco, Delmarva Power, and Potomac Edison, offers rebates on heat pumps, insulation, and home energy upgrades; homeowners who pair solar with a heat pump can use EmPOWER rebates to offset the heat pump cost while their solar system powers the heating, effectively eliminating both their electricity and gas or oil bills at the same time
  • Federal Tax Credit — Venture Home owns the system under a lease or PPA and claims the commercial Clean Electricity Investment Credit, passing those savings into your monthly rate. You file nothing. For purchased systems, the federal residential credit expired after December 31, 2025
  • Sales Tax Exemption — solar equipment is fully exempt from Maryland’s 6% sales tax
  • Property Tax Exemption — the added home value from solar is fully exempt from property tax assessment statewide; several counties (including Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Howard, and Prince George’s) add local tax credits on top

Hard working crew

Great job by a hard working crew. The foreman listened to my concerns about exposed conduit near the front of my house and did a really great job.

Excellent solar company

They are giving me great savings on my Electric. I had to wait for city permits, which they take care of, before installation can begin. Didn’t wait long. The installation went beautifully. They were very friendly, courteous, efficient, fast and cleaned everything up before they left.

Great transparency

Very informative salesperson, very professional install crew. Great transparency and super patient during the whole process. Had a few companies out, and Venture by far had the best presentation, and the best product to offer!

Frequently Asked Questions

What solar incentives are available in Maryland?

Maryland’s main programs are net metering and SRECs, plus sales and property tax exemptions. Net metering credits your bill at the full retail rate through all major utilities, with credits that roll forward indefinitely and an April true-up option to cash out any balance. SRECs pay you cash for every megawatt-hour your system generates for 15 years — current prices run roughly $40–55 per certificate. Solar equipment is fully exempt from Maryland’s 6% sales tax, and added home value from solar is exempt from property tax statewide. Venture Home handles SREC registration and utility interconnection as part of every installation.

How do Maryland SRECs work?

For every 1,000 kilowatt-hours (1 megawatt-hour) your system produces, you earn one SREC — a tradable certificate that Maryland utilities are required to purchase to meet the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard. You sell them through a broker or aggregator, and payments come to you as cash. A typical 10 kW Maryland system generates around 10–13 SRECs per year. At current prices of roughly $40–55 per certificate, that’s approximately $400–700 per year in additional income on top of your bill savings, for 15 years. Venture Home registers your system with the SREC program at installation so certificates start accruing immediately.

How much can I save on my electricity bills?

Maryland electricity rates have risen 37% since 2021 and show no sign of slowing. Solar locks in your energy cost for the life of the system. On top of bill savings, SRECs generate cash income for 15 years. Your total return depends on your system size, utility rate, and how you sell your SRECs. Venture Home builds a personalized projection — including SREC income estimates — as part of your free consultation.

How does net metering work in Maryland?

When your panels produce more than you use, the surplus goes to the grid and your utility credits your account at the full retail rate — a true 1:1 structure. Credits roll forward indefinitely, so summer overproduction offsets winter bills. Maryland holds a true-up each April, at which point you can cash out any remaining balance (at a lower rate than retail) or continue rolling credits forward. Net metering is available through all major Maryland utilities: BGE, Pepco, Delmarva Power, Potomac Edison, SMECO, and Choptank Electric Cooperative. Note: Maryland has a 3,000 MW statewide net metering capacity limit — locking in today ensures you benefit from the current favorable 1:1 structure.

What does a solar system cost in Maryland?

Maryland averages around $3.11 per watt installed — roughly $25,000–$35,000 for a typical system before incentives. The 6% sales tax exemption reduces that cost immediately at purchase. Combined with 15 years of SREC income and net metering bill savings, most Maryland systems pay back in approximately 10–12 years. Venture Home provides a free custom quote with a full savings and SREC income projection based on your actual bills and roof.

Does Maryland have any cash rebates for solar?

Maryland doesn’t offer a direct cash rebate on solar panels, but EmPOWER Maryland fills that gap for homeowners who pair solar with a heat pump or other efficiency upgrades. BGE, Pepco, Delmarva Power, and Potomac Edison all participate, offering rebates on qualifying cold-climate heat pumps and other improvements. The combination of SREC income, net metering bill credits, and EmPOWER heat pump rebates makes Maryland one of the stronger financial cases for solar in the mid-Atlantic — especially for homeowners currently on oil or propane heating. Venture Home walks through all available programs during your consultation.

Does Venture Home handle permits and SREC registration?

Yes — completely. We manage all local building and electrical permits, your interconnection application with your utility, and your SREC program registration. Getting your system registered promptly matters because SRECs accrue from your interconnection date — delay costs real money. Our team handles this process across all Maryland utility territories.

Do I need a battery? What happens during a power outage?

Without a battery, a grid-tied solar system shuts off during an outage. With battery backup, your system keeps essential circuits running from stored solar energy. Maryland’s 1:1 net metering policy makes the financial case for batteries less clear-cut than in states with less favorable net metering — you already get full credit for power you send to the grid. That said, battery backup is valuable for reliability and outage protection, which matters increasingly as extreme weather becomes more frequent. We will give you an honest assessment during your free consultation.
